Communication and Language

Communication and language development involves giving children opportunities to experience a rich language environment; to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves; and to speak and listen in a range of situations.

Communication and Language experiences are about…
  • Following directions
  • Learning new words
  • Beginning to understand 'why' and 'how' questions
  • Reading a favourite story over and over again.
  • Introducing a storyline or narrative into their play
  • Sharing experiences about families, holidays, pets…

Our nursery has been awarded Communication Friendly Status in 2025. This means that staff have completed additional training development designed to support communication development. Staff use a range of techniques to support children, including use of signs, communication boards and pictures. The curriculum is carefully planned to promote talk and we use interesting provocations to develop curiosity. We also teach vocabulary in a structured way using NELI which is a 20 week programme based around story books. All children in G3 participate in this, with some having an additional daily small group session to reinforce the learning and build their confidence in speaking.
